Bastyr University Clinic is the teaching clinic of Bastyr University in San Diego and opened its doors in 2012. The clinic offers as many as 10,000 patient visits a year. Our natural, non-invasive approach takes into account the whole person, which means longer appointments to ensure that you feel heard, respected, and understood. The nonprofit clinic also provides basic natural health care to diverse, often underserved, populations through its Community Care Sites. The program consists of sites throughout the San Diego area where advanced students in naturopathic medicine and acupuncture provide free or reduced-rate care under the supervision of Bastyr clinical faculty.
Bastyr University Clinic at a Glance
We provide a Team Care approach that involves one licensed, experienced practitioner and two or three advanced student clinicians, all invested in the outcome of your care. Our teams become partners in your health care, working together with you to discover your own unique route to wellness. If you prefer to see a licensed clinician one-on-one, appointments also are available in private practice. Your initial new patient appointment consists of two visits. This allows for the team to provide individualized care based on your medical needs and goals. If you are coming in for an acute illness, such as a sore throat or upper respiratory illness, you will be only scheduled with one visit, and the team will determine the course of treatment at that time.
The first visit will last 60 minutes, and the students and doctor will gather personal and medical information, review any initial questionnaires you completed, review any previous lab and imaging results, gather your concerns and goals, perform a focused exam, and order any additional labs as needed. You may be asked to complete a food or sleep diary or be given a questionnaire for the next visit. A basic short-term plan may be presented at this first visit.
At the second visit, any additional labs, questionnaires, or diaries will be reviewed. A more detailed physical exam may be performed. A comprehensive treatment plan will be discussed at this visit, with a summary of what follow-up is required.
A follow up visit will be scheduled to discuss progress and outline a long-term plan for any chronic conditions that require continued follow up.
